Enrique chasing titles, not cash
Jose Enrique insists that his imminent transfer to Liverpool from Newcastle is motivated by a desire to win trophies, rather than looking for higher wages.
The left-back, who is expected to complete a move to Anfield on Friday, feels he has more chance of glory with the Reds.
“I want to fight for titles and I think it more possible to do that with Liverpool than Newcastle,” the Spaniard was quoted as saying by The Sun.
Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish had been determined to sign Enrique after his initial target, Gael Clichy, chose Manchester City instead after leaving Arsenal.
And now Enrique joins Charlie Adam, Stewart Downing, Jordan Henderson and Doni in making the move to Anfield this summer.
When asked about the reported move by Newcastle to offer him 50,000 pounds a week more to extend his contract and stay at St James’ Park, Enrique said: “I prefer not to comment further on that.”
“But Newcastle did promise to solve my situation before the season and this has happened.”
It is not clear whether Enrique will be able to take part in the Reds’ opening Premier League fixture against Sunderland this weekend.
