Rafael is available again after suspension as Manchester United bid to open up a five-point lead at the top of the Premier League.

The Brazilian full-back sat out Saturday’s 5-0 win over Birmingham, so now Sir Alex Ferguson must decide whether to offer him instant recall or stick with John O’Shea, who played a key role in United’s opener at Old Trafford.

Rio Ferdinand (groin) and Michael Carrick (ankle) are both doubts, but Ryan Giggs has already been promised a place for the Red Devils’ first top-flight meeting with the Seasiders since 1971.

Blackpool boss Ian Holloway will have to find a makeshift left-back.

Stephen Crainey has been ruled out with an ankle injury sustained in Saturday’s home defeat with Sunderland, so with David Carney still on international duty with Australia at the Asian Cup, Alex Baptiste is the likely deputy.

Goalkeeper Richard Kingson has been cleared to play after requiring stitches in a head wound, whilst DJ Campbell has recovered from a bout of food poisoning for United’s first top-flight visit in 40 years.

The last time Blackpool and Manchester United were both in the top flight the two encounters ended 1-1.

Manchester United have now gone 27 Premier League games unbeaten, just two fewer than their previous best (29 – between 26/12/1998 & 03/10/1999).

In the last two meetings where Blackpool have faced Manchester United, they have failed to score and have conceded at least three goals (0-3 & 0-4).

Blackpool last managed a league win against Manchester United in September 1963; prevailing 1-0 at Bloomfield Road.

The Tangerines have won 38% (5/13) of their away games in the top-flight this season, but just three of their nine Premier League home games (33%).

Just two of Dimitar Berbatov’s 17 Premier League goals this season have come away from Old Trafford.

Blackpool’s last eight Premier League goals at Bloomfield Road have been scored by seven different players.

Blackpool have conceded 142 shots on target in the Premier League this season; the most, while the Red Devils have conceded the fewest; 65.

Manchester United have drawn eight of their 10 Premier League away matches this season.

Premier League matches at Bloomfield Road this season have averaged 3.4 goals a game.
