Prayer – rather than perfection – is key to stopping Barcelona ace Lionel Messi, according to AC Milan defender Thiago Silva.

The Brazil defender feels that practice and experience will not be enough to help him stop the Argentina star when they renew their battles in Europe, with Barca visiting the San Siro for Wednesday’s Group H clash.

Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri believes it will be a ‘dream’ to play La Liga outfit Barcelona at San Siro, but Thiago Silva warns that it could turn into a nightmare unless there is a source of divine intervention.

“How do you stop Messi? You have to perform the holy trinity and then pray,” the defender told Globoesporte.

“It’s difficult stopping Messi and very complicated when playing someone with his speed and expertise.”

“Some players lack quality, but Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have it all.”

“They are very difficult to mark, it’s something that just comes in the moment you play them.”

“You have to make a decision, do the trinity and pray for the best.”

Thiago Silva has long been linked with a move to Camp Nou, but suggested a stay at Milan is more than likely.

“A club like Barcelona is always attractive as they are the best in the world, but Milan are not too far behind them and we are always improving,” he said.
