La Liga – Almeria shock Sevilla with win
Almeria stunned Sevilla with a 3-1 victory in their La Liga clash at the Estadio Sanchez Pizjuan with Pablo Piatti’s brace lifting the visitors out of the relegation zone.
Frederic Kanoute missed a first-half penalty, before Fabian Vargas finally opened the scoring three minutes after the restart, and Pablo Piatti looked to have sealed the win as he added a second in the 81st minute.
Kanoute pulled one back two minutes later to give the hosts fleeting hope, but Alexis was shown a second yellow card late on, before Piatti doubled his tally with a stoppage-time strike to wrap up the victory for Almeria.
Sevilla were almost in front as early as the fifth minute after Fernandez Jose Carlos cut inside on to his left foot on the edge of the Almeria box and curled an exquisite effort against the underside of the crossbar, with the ball bouncing agonisingly in front of the goalline on its way down.
The hosts were then awarded a penalty in the 20th minute as Fabian Vargas handled the ball inside his own box and was duly booked for his infringement.
Kanoute stepped up, but the striker could only plant a tame effort at Diego Alvez, who pulled off a comfortable save sprawling to his right to parry the ball wide and prevent his goal from being breached.
Sevilla defender Alexis those rose imperiously in the Almeria box to head narrowly wide of the far post in the 27th minute, and Almeria were handed another reprieve with Alvez comprehensively beaten.
Almeria did force the occasional fleeting attack, and Miguel Angel Corona hammered a superb shot towards the top corner of the net, only for Andres Palop to concede a corner with a fine reflex save two minutes before the break.
But for all their possession, Sevilla were the side behind in the 49th minute as Vargas converted Corona’s cross with a powerful close-range header at the second time of asking, with Palop unable to pull off a double reflex save.
The game appeared to be over after Piatti lashed home a stunning finish from the edge of the Sevilla box to leave Palop absolutely no chance of preventing Almeria assuming a two-goal lead, but that was only the start of the drama.
Sevilla went straight up the other end as Kanoute tapped the ball home from close range to convert Diego Capel’s cross from the right, and suddenly the hosts looked to be back in the contest.
But Alexis was then shown a second yellow card and dismissed in the final minute, and suddenly Sevilla were forced on to the back foot.
Almeria capitalised immediately as Crusat forced his way to the right byline and cut the ball back, with Piatti storming into the box and executing the most sublime backheel to beat Palop and make it three.
The shock win lifts Almeria out of the relegation zone with 14 points on the board, while Sevilla were unable to make ground from 10th spot in the table. ( soccer news )
