The Incdredible Beckham
David Robert Joseph Beckham, a prolific midfielder and an inspirational figure on the pitch, has achieved massive success during his long and illustrious career, while playing for celebrated top clubs like Manchester United, Real Madrid, and AC Milan. He has made 115 appearances for England national team, scoring 17 goals.
Beckham started his playing career as a Manchester United youth team player and helped the club win cup in 1992. He remained with the club till 1994 but did not get enough games to play as he was still considered as part of the youth set-up.
Beckham was loaned to Preston North End in order to get some matches under his belt. During his stay at Preston, Beckham scored a couple of goals during his five appearances and had been reverted to Manchester United after the loan period ended. Beckham, finally, made his United debut against Leeds United in 1995 in a goalless draw.
His eight-year stay at the club witnessed him play 399 games in which he scored 87 times. The 2001-02 season was the best in terms of his scoring form. He scored 16 goals from 43 appearances. While he was with United, Beckham won six Premier League titles and one Champion’s League. He was also part of a United team who won the FA Cup twice and Community Shield four times.
In August 1996, Beckham was awarded the Premier League player of the month while he got the PFA player of the year award in 1996-97.
Beckham’s achievement also included the Goal of the Decade, which he scored against Wimbledon in 1996. He also won BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 2001 and got the best male player of the year award in 2004. He was also included in English football Hall of Fame in 2008.
The England midfielder switched over to Real Madrid from United in 2003 transfer window for a fee of 25 million pounds, which was followed by Madrid’s 3-0 win for Spanish Super Cup against RCD Mallorca. During the same season, Beckham was the runner-up in the Copa del Rey, reached the quarterfinals of the Champion’s League and finished the league the top four. This, according to the club’s president, was an achievement in presence of stars like Brazilian Ronaldo, Zinedine Zidane, Luis Figo, Roberto Carlos and Raul etc.
Playing for Madrid, this inspirational figure made 155 appearances and scored 20 times for the club. He scored most goals i.e. seven in 2003-04.
Beckham, instead of signing a new contract with the Spanish club, chose to get involved in major league soccer and this news spread like jungle fire when it was confirmed that the prolific midfielder is now going to represent MLS Los Angeles Galaxy. This deal was reported to be of about 250 million US dollars. This Beckham deal proved to be a jackpot for the club as the club signed a shirt sponsorship deal for 20 million US dollars. During his two-year stint at Galaxy, Beckham scored five times from his 25 appearances.
In 2008, Beckham sealed a loan move to AC Milan but made it clear that he won’t be leaving LA Galaxy in the near future. During his stay at Milan, David made 20 appearances and scored two times before he returned to Galaxy in 2009. During that stint, the midfielder made 15 appearances and scored two goals for the club.
