Hamburg striker Ruud van Nistelrooy has admitted that his proposed return to former club Real Madrid proved to be a “forbidden love”.

Real wanted the Dutchman to return to the Santiago Bernabeu until the end of the season, just a year after allowing him to leave for the Bundesliga.

However, with HSV suffering striker problems of their own, they refused to sanction the switch, and Madrid instead turned their attention to a loan deal for Manchester City’s Emmanuel Adebayor.

Speaking in an interview with AS, the 34-year-old remarked of the transfer saga: “I’m at a phase in my career where I could not imagine playing for Madrid again.

“They bid a four-month contract to a player of 34 years of age. It is amazing. They did everything possible, and so did I, but it was a forbidden love. There are things in life that you think that are possible, but aren’t.

“We made many efforts but it could not be. It is a huge disappointment, but I will continue playing football.”
